The Boxing World Cup held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, has come to an end. Azerbaijan’s national team delivered a historic performance at the tournament, which brought together 400 athletes from 49 countries. For the first time in history, Azerbaijan won 3 gold and 1 bronze medal at the World Cup.
In the final, Subhan Mamedov (50 kg) faced Issam Bensaylar of Morocco. Dominating all three rounds, the Azerbaijani boxer secured a convincing 5:0 victory (30:27, 30:27, 29:28, 29:28, 30:27) to claim the gold medal.
Following him, Mahammad Abdullayev (+90 kg) also stepped onto the top podium. In the decisive bout, he took on Davit Chaloyan of Armenia and defeated his opponent by a 3:2 decision (29:28, 28:29, 28:29, 29:28, 29:28). Abdullayev secured Azerbaijan’s third gold medal and brought the Azerbaijani national anthem to the arena for the third time in Brazil.
Earlier in the first session of the finals, Saidjamshid Jafarov (75 kg) was crowned World Cup champion, while Nabi Isgandarov (70 kg) had previously earned a bronze medal.
As a result, Azerbaijan’s men’s national team finished the World Cup in second place in the team standings with 3 gold and 1 bronze medal. Competing with only six male boxers, the Azerbaijani team was surpassed by the host nation solely on the basis of silver medals.
It should be noted that Azerbaijan’s boxers will return home on April 29.
