The World Boxing Cup has commenced in Guiyang, China. On the opening day of the ranking event, two members of the Azerbaijani national team stepped into the ring.
In the 50 kg weight category, Subhan Mamedov faced India's Rishi Singh in the Round of 16. The reigning world champion won all three rounds to secure a unanimous 5:0 victory (30:27, 29:28, 30:27, 29:28, 30:27). Mamedov will next take on Uzbekistan's Asilbek Jalilov, who received a bye in the opening round. The bout is scheduled for June 19.
Mohammadali Ashiraliyev (60 kg) also enjoyed a winning start to the tournament. He defeated Poland's Jakub Krzpeiti by a 3:2 split decision (29:28, 28:29, 27:30, 27:30, 29:28) and advanced to the Round of 16, where he will face Brazil's Luis Gabriel. The bout will take place on June 17.
Azerbaijan is represented at the World Boxing Cup by a team of eight boxers.
