1867 - THE MARQUESS OF QUEENSBERRY RULES
14.04.2026
In 1867, the Marquess of Queensberry Rules were published, marking the beginning of a new era in boxing. These rules established clear standards to ensure bouts were conducted in a more organized, transparent, and safer manner.
They introduced key elements that still define modern boxing today: the mandatory use of gloves, three-minute rounds, one-minute rest intervals, a ten-second count for knockdowns, and the prohibition of wrestling and grappling techniques.
As a result of these innovations, boxing evolved from a simple test of brute strength into a sport defined by skill, strategy, and technical mastery.
